Aaron Boone claps back during press conference for asking a question he disapproved of

The New York Yankees felt like they were on top of the world. They (Aaron Judge, then Giancarlo Stanton) hit back-to-back home runs against elite closer Emmanuel Clase to tie the game and then rallied against the Cleveland Guardians in the eighth inning of Game 3 of the ALCS. But then Guardians outfielder Jhonkensy Noel hit a home run in the ninth inning to tie the game and send the game into overtime. Then David Fry hit a walk-off home run to close things out.

For a moment, it felt like a 3-0 Yankees lead was a sure thing. The score is now 2-1 and the Guardians are well represented in this series.

After the game, Boone was asked if he ever felt like the Yankees had the game “in the bag.” Visibly upset by the question, he responded and almost mocked the reporter's question by saying, “That means, come on, no.” Do you have that in your pocket? Stop it.”

The reporter clarified that the cheers from the Yankees' dugout gave the impression that the team felt like they had won. “It's the playoffs, man, you're hitting (game-winning) homers and go-ahead homers… That's what it looks like.”

“In the playoffs you never have anything in your pocket, no. The thing is, you never take anything for granted. So no, I mean, but you’re going to celebrate big moments like that all the time.”

After taking a late lead and watching his final pitchers succumb to the Guardians' offense, the feeling of never having it all together was all too real for Boone to even think about after Game 3.

Game 4 is Friday evening.
