Inter Milan president says: “Too many injuries, fixture list needs to be shortened”

Inter Milan president Beppe Marotta believes there are “too many injuries” in football at the moment and the fixture list must take this into account.

The Nerazzurri president expressed his thoughts to Italian broadcaster DAZN via FCInterNews ahead of tonight's Serie A clash against Roma.

Inter currently have three injured players out.

Tajon Buchanan, Piotr Zielinski and Kristjan Asllani are all currently on the sidelines.

This is obviously relatively manageable for Inter. But these are by no means the only injuries the team has suffered so far this season.

Even when players were fit, it sometimes felt like they lacked sharpness.

This is because many players hardly had a break between their club and international duties.

Then there is a risk of more serious injuries, which could result in players being sidelined for months.

Inter-Ownership attacking midfielder Valentin Carboni became the latest player to suffer a noticeable cruciate ligament injury.

The Argentine follows the likes of Rodri, Dani Carvajal, Bremer and Duvan Zapata.

Inter President Beppe Marotta: “Too many injuries, game plan has to be shortened”

Injuries are a part of football. But they appear to be a greater threat to players and teams than ever before.

This will become more and more the case as the season progresses.

Inter, for their part, will play seven games in the next three weeks until the next international break. And then many of their players will also play with their national teams in November.

Then there is the upcoming Club World Cup. This competition has added a few more games to the already demanding schedule of participating teams, including Inter.

Inter President Marotta said: “Allow me to be proactive in expressing criticism.”

“We have to live with the stress of many games and the players are struggling to cope,” he said.

“There have been around a hundred injuries to players on their national teams,” Marotta continued.

“We have to protect ourselves against that. This is not easy because we have to find ways to prevent it.”

“We have to sit at the table and understand whether the schedule can be shortened,” Marotta said.

Marotta also said that “squad depth now needs to be expanded.”

“Especially when it comes to the quality in depth.”

“It is difficult for big clubs to talk about starters and then backups. I would talk about starters and co-starters instead.”

“For this we have to have players who can achieve our goals,” said Marotta.

The Nerazzurri president emphasized: “We have 23 to 24 players who can all compete against each other in any competition.”

“Then it’s up to the coach to make the selection decisions.”
