Daylight saving time 2024: When does it end?

Daylight saving time 2024: When does it end?

ROCHESTER, NY (WROC) – We have been slowly losing daylight since June 20th of this year. While it may not have been noticeable for most of the summer, we are certainly starting to notice it now. With Daylight Saving Time only lasting two weeks, we can enjoy the later sunset times for now. But in two weeks you can expect our sunsets much earlier.

What is Daylight Saving Time?

Summer time is the period between the months of March and November the most Americans set their clocks forward one hour. As we “spring forward” into March, it’s all about adding more daylight in the evenings. The opposite is true when we “fall back” in November – we gain an hour to ensure daylight in the morning.

When did summer time start this year?

Daylight Saving Time in 2024 began around 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 10th. At this point our clocks were set forward one hour.

So when does daylight saving time end this year?

Daylight saving time ends this year on Sunday, November 3rd at around 2 a.m. This night you will gain an hour of sleep as our clocks “reset”.

Does every state observe daylight saving time?

Mostly yes. This is the case in Hawaii and most of Arizona not Observe summer time. Due to its dry desert climate, Arizona avoids daylight saving time, with the exception of the Navajo Nation. Hawaii is the only other state that skips Daylight Saving Time. Due to its location near the equator, there is little variation in daylight hours throughout the year. There are also five other US territories that are not participating:

  • American Samoa

  • Guam

  • Northern Mariana Islands

  • Puerto Rico

  • US Virgin Islands

What does this mean for WNY?

Basically, you can kiss daylight goodbye. Okay, that's an exaggeration. The amount of daylight we will see in a day will become shorter and shorter until we reach the winter solstice, which falls on Saturday, December 21st of this year.
