The New York Liberty won their first-ever WNBA championship with a 67-62 overtime victory over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday night.

George Washington seventh-grader Jonquel Jones was named 2024 Finals MVP after averaging 17.8 points and 7.6 rebounds while shooting 56 percent from the field during the 2024 Finals.

During Game 5, Jones finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds and one assist, helping the Liberty win the title.

Jones was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks before being traded to the Connecticut Sun with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2016 WNBA Draft.

Jones fought back tears as he accepted the award from WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

“You know my story, you all know how many times I was denied, but it was just a delay,” Jones said after the game. “I’m so happy to be doing it here.”

The Grand Bahamas-born 30-year-old adds this award to a long list that includes the 2017 Most Improved Player award, the 2018 Sixth Woman of the Year award and the 2021 MVP award.

Teammates Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart struggled in Game 5, so Jones' ability to step up for her team was crucial to their overtime win.

Ionescu finished the game 1-for-19, five points, eight assists and seven rebounds, while Stewie added 13 points and went 4-for-15 with 15 rebounds.
