Deshaun Watson hints that the Browns are interested in trading for the former Clemson teammate

After Davante Adams was traded to the New York Jets, one player had a question mark hanging over his head entering Week 7 as he now seems like an irrelevant fixture in the Meadowlands: Mike Williams.

Williams, who has had the misfortune of scoring two key wins with New York so far this season, is suddenly expendable with Adams alongside Aaron Rodgers and Co. And there have already been some rumors about his name being dropped by the Jets as a possible trade target for teams looking for wide receiver reinforcements.

A fun fact about Williams is that he is a former teammate of Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson. They played together at Clemson University, where they scored 11 touchdowns and 98 total receptions in 2016 and where Watson finished the season with a 151.1 passing percentage and 41 total touchdowns. This all culminated in a national championship as well.

So it's no surprise that Watson seems excited about the idea of ​​trading Williams to Cleveland as the Jets search for potential suitors.

“Man, that’s AB (Andrew Berry) and Kevin (Stefanski) and the guys up front, but of course when it happened. I love Mike. That's my dog, my boy, and he's definitely a great addition. “But yeah, that's more for AB and Kevin,” Watson told Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot in his Week 7 workout availability.

While the addition of Williams before the trade deadline could be a fun quirk in this Browns offense, it seems like Cleveland will likely be a seller, not a buyer, this season. At 1-5 and with Watson showing no signs of returning to his former self from his time with the Houston Texans, it seems exaggerated to assume that the team would come calling to bring one of his old friends into the fold.

The team also faces a cap space conundrum heading into 2025. Cleveland has 22 free agents on the market – some of whom are current starters, like Jedrick Wills, Nick Chubb and Elijah Moore. Many of them will likely leave as the Browns try to keep their defense together – especially Myles Garrett. While the team probably won't have to continually release players if they keep losing, I wouldn't expect them to add anyone of significance this season as they wait for the disaster that awaits them in the 2025-26 season.

If they start Week 10 with a sudden 4-5 win and on the verge of a comeback, you might see some moves made to keep that momentum going. Since there isn't one currently, we should assume the front office is sticking with a pact.
