According to sources, Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia

Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul whose alleged sexual misconduct fueled the #MeToo movement and against whom new charges were recently filed, suffers from chronic myelogenous leukemia, two sources told NBC News.

The sources added that Weinstein is being treated at Rikers Island Prison in New York. Chronic myeloid leukemia is a rare form of bone marrow cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic.

In a statement to NBC News on Monday evening, Weinstein's legal health representative, Craig Rothfeld, said in part: “Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein's privacy, we will have no further comment.”

News of Weinstein's diagnosis comes amid a host of health issues. Last month, he underwent emergency heart surgery to relieve a significant amount of fluid in his lungs and heart.

In July, he was hospitalized and tested positive for Covid-19 and double pneumonia.

Weinstein's health problems are related to his legal battle with the Manhattan district attorney's office over their efforts to combine his original 2020 sex crimes with a new criminal indictment. Prosecutors have sought to consolidate the new charges with those previously brought against Weinstein so they can be tried together in court.

Weinstein's conviction in New York was overturned this year as he served a 23-year sentence. The New York appeals court found that the judge in the landmark trial disadvantaged Weinstein with improper rulings, including the decision to let women testify about allegations that were not part of the case.

But Weinstein was not released after the court decision because he was convicted of rape in Los Angeles in 2022 and sentenced to 16 years in prison. His legal team is appealing this conviction.
