Harvey Weinstein has been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, a report says

Topline

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein — who has been accused of sexual assault by multiple women and indicted by a grand jury on new charges last month — is battling a form of bone marrow cancer, NBC News reported Monday night.

Important facts

According to NBC News, Weinstein is being treated for chronic myeloid leukemia at New York's Rikers Island prison.

According to the National Cancer Institute, chronic myeloid leukemia is a disease in which “the bone marrow produces too many white blood cells” and usually occurs “at or after middle age.”

In a statement to multiple media outlets, Weinstein's representatives declined to comment on the report “out of respect for Mr. Weinstein's privacy,” calling public discussion of his private health matters “disturbing and unacceptable.”

The report of Weinstein's cancer diagnosis comes a month after the disgraced Hollywood producer underwent emergency heart surgery. At the time, his representatives told Forbes that Weinstein had to be “admitted” from Rikers Hospital to Bellevue Hospital “for multiple medical issues.” They added that he had a “procedure and heart surgery.” In July, Weinstein was transferred from Rikers to Bellevue Hospital to undergo treatment for multiple illnesses, including COVID-19 and pneumonia. Weinstein was also treated for numerous other ailments, including diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid buildup in the heart and lungs, his representatives said.

Important background

Last month, Weinstein pleaded not guilty to committing a criminal sexual act after being indicted by a grand jury earlier that month. The former Hollywood mogul has reportedly been charged with one count of first-degree criminal sexual act, but further details about the allegations are unknown. The grand jury's indictment was reportedly based on evidence related to three new assault allegations against Weinstein from the mid-2000s and 2016. Over 100 women have accused the disgraced producer of sexual assault, rape, harassment, and sexual assault over the course of his four-decade career Hollywood accused of wrongdoing. Weinstein was convicted of criminal sexual assault and third-degree rape in New York in 2020 – and later of similar charges in Los Angeles. But the conviction in New York was overturned by an appeals court in April after it was found that the presiding judge had mistakenly allowed other women who accused Weinstein of sexual assault but were not part of the case to testify.
