PUNE: Washington Sundar has added another feather to his cap. He was a sort of 'super substitute' in the absence of Virat Kohli and many others as India won Brisbane Testand with it the series Down Under in 2020-21. Now he is India's 'super addition'.
Coming into the second Test as 16th after the turnaround in Bengaluru, Washington scored a dream 7/59, including 7/28 in 61 balls, giving India's campaign a much-needed boost.
After scoring 152 in a Ranji match in Delhi, his second-highest first-class score, he produced his best-ever first-class bowling performance in Pune on Thursday. He is only playing in his fifth Test.

Washington called the turnaround in 10 days “God's plan” and thanked the team management and selectors for giving him a chance. On Rachin's dismissal, he said: “When it happens, it's magical.”

He also hoped that he would get more chances to play if India opted for a three-spin attack. A left-handed batsman, Washington said the experience of playing red-ball cricket (Ranji) helped him a lot in terms of his rhythm with the bat and ball. He also stressed the need to be precise on this track.
When Luke Ronchi said some of New Zealand's batsmen were “unfortunately” out, he wasn't entirely wrong. Because it was a magical day for Washington. “Washington has shown consistency,” the New Zealand batting coach said. “He bowled well beyond the crease, got the drift and made the batsmen play.”

He also said the pitch didn't turn as much as they expected. Ronchi reckoned that after looking at the behavior of the pitch in the first session, the Indians bowled slower and also varied their pace on a pitch that lacked consistent bounce.
However, Washington said that after the ball became soft, he and Ashwin discussed “more speed and putting more body into the balls.” The venue is also special to Washington as he has made it his own IPL debut in 2016 for Pune here after Ashwin was injured.
When Washington takes someone's place, he is doubly dangerous.
