Hundreds of acres burn in Rogers County fires; No injuries reported

Multiple grass fires burned hundreds of acres in Rogers County on Thursday.

Emergency services are still monitoring possible outbreaks.

No injuries were reported, according to Rogers County Emergency Management.

Claremore residents say they are grateful that crews responded quickly to prevent the fire from getting worse.

Roy Lyons said he got the call Thursday afternoon to come home because part of his property was on fire.

“Whenever I got the call, the firefighters were with my stepmother,” Lyons said. “So I felt like this would most likely be under control. But the accelerator gets a little heavy when you get that call.”

Lyons' property was burned, but he is glad his home and family are safe.

He says the fire is devastating to the area because it was also hit by the Claremore tornado earlier this year.

“The tornado took out our roof and did some more damage that we had to repair there,” Lyons said. “My neighbors north of me, my family north of me, within a mile, they took a direct hit, there was a lot of tree damage out here.”

Jonathan Burkholder was driving by when he saw the fire and decided to grab a shovel and help put out the flames.

“I don’t mind seeing a fire if it’s under control or not windy or on a nice fall evening,” Burkholder said. “I heard on the radio today that there is a great risk of fire. It just makes me sad to see something like this happen.”

Neighbors are grateful for the quick response from the fire and rescue crews and say they quickly got the problem under control.

“They communicate well,” Lyons said. “You're doing a good job. With a fire like this here, of course, a lot more resources have to be brought in, so we are grateful that the surrounding districts are also helping.”

Rogers County still has a burn ban in effect, so it's important to be careful when grilling and smoking cigarettes.
