Jimmy John's debuts sandwich with giant cucumber instead of bread

The pickle bun sandwich has entered the mainstream.

On October 24, Jimmy John's introduced its newest menu item – the Picklewich – which uses a kosher dill pickle in place of bread and includes all of the usual JJ's accoutrements.

The savory sandwich will be available at participating locations nationwide from October 28th to November 14th.

Jimmy John's offers the picklewich two ways:

  • The Vito: This cucumber-based remix of the original Vito substance consists of a seeded kosher dill pickle stuffed with salami, capocollo, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sauce and herbs.
  • Turkey and Provolone: This one takes a gutted kosher dill pickle and stuffs it with turkey, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and onions.

In honor of its pair of Pickle Sammies, Jimmy John's is also bringing back its pairing of Pickle Jimmy Chips.

To celebrate a spooky season of brine, Jimmy John's has named noted pickle lover Snooki Polizzi as spokesman for the Picklewich launch.

To celebrate the launch, the “Jersey Shore” icon appears in a video as the hilarious “Pickle Witch.”

“I love cucumbers – they’re my thing,” Polizzi said in a press release. “And a cucumber sandwich? A dream comes true. It's like Jimmy John made the new picklewich just for me! The Vito Picklewich is my favorite. But if you’re a pickle lover, you have to try both!”

Pickle roll sandwiches have been a recurring viral phenomenon for years. Although it's unclear who invented the sandwich riff, cucumber sandwiches have drawn droves of customers to three restaurants in the Tristate area.

In 2019, Elsie's, a now-closed sandwich shop in Haddon Township, New Jersey, went viral for its cucumber sandwiches.

Then, in April of this year, Elsie's Sub Shop (a different restaurant than the aforementioned Elsie's) went viral when a TikToker posted about its cucumber sandwiches. The Red Bank, New Jersey, restaurant has been open since 1959, and its owner told TODAY.com that the shop has been offering these sandwiches for about a decade.

And in July, Seven Brothers Gourmet Food Market on Long Island added a pickle sandwich to its menu, driving so much new business that orders for buckets of pickles quadrupled.

Pickles: They're good for business.
