The Seahawks reunite with 42-year-old Jason Peters, the oldest player on the NFL roster

The Seattle Seahawks have signed veteran offensive lineman Jason Peters to the practice squad, his agency announced Tuesday morning. Peters, 42, played in eight games for the Seahawks last season, including two starts. He recently visited Seattle to discuss a possible reunion.

Peters is now the oldest player on the NFL roster this season and older than 11 NFL head coaches, including his own in Mike Macdonald. Macdonald is 37 years old.

The injury issues that necessitated the signing of Peters last year have resurfaced. Last year, Peters stepped in to replace right tackle Abe Lucas, who is still on the PUP list due to a knee injury – the same injury that caused him to miss most of the 2023 season. It's unclear when Lucas will play this year.

The Seahawks signed veteran swing tackle George Fant as insurance in case Lucas' knee injury lingered into the regular season, but Fant suffered a knee problem of his own in Week 1 and was placed on the injured list on September 20.

After Lucas and Fant, Seattle has turned to 2021 sixth-round pick Stone Forsythe at right tackle. He was shaky in Week 1, but has been much more stable in his three starts since then.

During his KIRO-AM radio show Tuesday morning, Macdonald praised Forsythe and the offensive line for their performance in Monday's 42-29 loss to the Detroit Lions. There is no indication that Forsythe will be used in favor of Peters, who would probably need a few weeks to get into game shape.

Seattle's other backup tackles are rookie Michael Jerrell and second-year pro McClendon Curtis. Peters is obviously a more experienced option, which is why the Seahawks have remained in contact with him about a possible return.

Seattle will likely monitor Peters' conditioning over the next few weeks while keeping an eye on Lucas and Fant. There's no guarantee they'll have to play Peters, but his signing shows they'd prefer a veteran in an emergency rather than some of the young players already on the roster.
