Erik ten Hag is leaving Manchester United

Manchester United have announced that Erik ten Hag has left his role as manager.

The Dutchman is leaving the club after two and a half years as coach. He lost his last game 2-1 against West Ham United on Sunday.

Ten Hag leaves Man Utd in 14th place in the Premier League, seven points off fourth place, with the club just seven points above the relegation zone.

Ten Hag was appointed in April 2022 and led the club to two domestic trophies, winning the EFL Cup in 2022/23 and the FA Cup last season.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has been appointed interim head coach while the club recruits a permanent head coach.

What happened to Ten Hag

Ten Hag arrived from Ajax and enjoyed a promising first season at Man Utd. His side finished third and won the EFL Cup – their first major honor in six years.

Despite starting the season with two defeats, Ten Hag achieved several impressive results including wins against Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal.

They finished the season with 75 points, their second-best Premier League tally since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012/13.

However, last season proved to be a difficult one for Ten Hag.

The club suffered several injuries in the 2023/24 season, with regular defenders Luke Shaw and Lisandro Martinez missing much of the season, adding to United's problems.

Man Utd conceded 58 goals, the most in a Premier League season, and suffered nine home defeats in all competitions, the most in a single season since the same number of defeats in the 1973/74 season.

The Red Devils were also eliminated in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League and an eighth-place finish was their lowest finish in Premier League history.

However, the season ended on a positive note as they won the FA Cup and beat rivals Man City 2-1 at Wembley, a result which also saw them qualify for the UEFA Europa League that season.

Earlier this summer, Ten Hag extended his contract until June 2026, saying there was “complete agreement” on the vision at the club.

When will Man Utd be back in action?

Man Utd's next game is on Wednesday October 30th when they take on Leicester City in the EFL Cup.

Their next Premier League game is against Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday November 3rd.
