BYU breaks 100 mark in exhibition games against Westminster with help from new recruits – BYU Athletics – Official Athletics Website

PROVO, Utah – With nine newcomers and three returning players, the Cougars showcased both new and old talent in their 105-37 win over Westminster at the Marriott Center on Tuesday night.

“I think this was a really good game to see what we have and what we can do,” head coach Amber Whiting said. “We gave them some pretty lofty goals and I feel like they’ve come out of it with flying colors.

Returning sophomore Amari Whiting, transfer Kemery Congdon and freshman Delaney Gibb contributed double-digit scoring on the night. BYU totaled 10 three-pointers, 48 ​​rebounds and 21 assists and held the Griffins to just three three-pointers and three assists. BYU shot 62.7 percent for the game and held the Griffins to 23.7 percent from the field.

BYU outscored Westminster by at least 15 points every quarter and surpassed the century mark for the first time since 2022, albeit in an exhibition game.

First quarter

With five points from Congdon, BYU quickly jumped to a 7-0 lead. Whiting and Gibb each made back-to-back layups, and Congdon sank her second three-pointer of the night, forcing Westminster's first timeout as the Cougars made an 18-4 lead.

Junior transfer Marya Hudgins extended BYU's lead to 22-4 after the timeout with a three-pointer and a free throw. The Griffins added a few more points to the tally, but the Cougars maintained a 26-9 lead at the end of the quarter.

Second quarter

The two teams opened the duel in the second quarter with a three-pointer from senior Lauren Davenport and two layups each from Whiting and senior Emma Calvert. After the media timeout, Gibb scored three straight layups, including one as a steal, to give BYU a 43-20 lead.

The Cougars scored another seven points in a row and ended the first half with a 15-2 run to take a 52-22 lead into the break.

Whiting and Gibb led the Cougars with 14 points each in the first half. The Cougars totaled 10 assists and 24 rebounds with a 68.8 percent field goal percentage and held the Griffins to 23.7 percent from the floor.

Third quarter

BYU opened the second half with a 12-0 run, which led to the first Westminster timeout of the quarter. The Griffins stopped the Cougars' run after the timeout with two straight layups, but BYU maintained its lead at 64-25 heading into the media timeout.

The Cougars scored another 11 points after the timeout and finished the quarter with a 77-32 lead.

Fourth quarter

Whiting, Gibb and Calvert gave BYU a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter before Westminster scored its first points after four and a half minutes. Five consecutive points from Hudgins and Naia Tanuvasa gave the Cougars an 89-33 lead and forced another Westminster timeout.

After the timeout, BYU made three three-pointers by Hattie Ogden, Brinley Cannon and Tanuvasa. Freshman Sarah Bartholomew broke the 100-point barrier for the Cougars with consecutive layups. Cannon finished the game with another three-pointer to give BYU a 105-37 win.
