MINNEAPOLIS – Experts believe the 2024 presidential election is closer than ever before.

And with Election Day less than a week away, both campaigns are doing everything they can to attract more supporters to the polls.

“It was always going to be an extremely close race,” said Democratic strategist Abou Amara.

However, recent polls suggest that former President Donald Trump has gained ground over Vice President Kamala Harris, Amara says.

“Kamala's team has to figure out how to create a contrast (with Trump) but at the same time present your vision positively to close the gap that the polls show,” Amara said.

Republican strategist Amy Koch says the Harris campaign focused too much on Trump and didn't differentiate itself enough from President Joe Biden's administration.

“The things that people are thinking about now as they go to the polls is the Biden administration, and the Biden-Harris administration will hold on to it,” Koch said.

Koch believes Harris initially got a boost after she replaced Biden in the race, but Trump has since closed the gap.

Polls also show Wisconsin's presidential vote within one percentage point.

“I think both parties know that western Wisconsin is a crucial swing region,” said Anthony Chergosky, an associate professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Chergosky described the western part of the state as one of the “most vibrant regions in one of the most dazzling states in the nation.”

The three experts also discussed various local races in both states and how close they are, which is shown in the embedded videos.

CBS News Minnesota will provide live election coverage on Tuesday from 6 to 10 p.m.
