Kelsea Ballerini's Patterns tour “Hair and Makeup” has a nod to her new album

Kelsea Ballerini's Patterns tour “Hair and Makeup” has a nod to her new album

If you were lucky enough to snag tickets to Kelsea Ballerini's sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, October 29, you would probably have memorized every word, too Pattern– within four days of its release last week. For me personally, the evening was like a cathartic sing-along to Ballerini's fifth studio album, which the artist describes as a “brutal look at myself and the people I love most.”

Each attendee was dressed in fringe and cowboy boots or studs and glitter as they surveyed the crowd. The occasional concert goer wore merchandise for Ballerini's hits like “Cowboys Cry Too” or DIY tributes to “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat.” But my main takeaway was that about one in five of the 19,000 attendees—regardless of hair texture and color—tried to recreate Ballerini's popular tousled beach waves.

With that in mind, it was no surprise when the CMT Awards winner appeared on stage (sitting on a giant pile of luggage) with this exact hairstyle, which was both a trademark and a nod to her song lyrics. “The texture and style aim to evoke the emotions associated with her music and the duality that comes with being pulled back and forth between the sandy beaches of South Carolina and New York,” Kelsey shares Deenihan, Ballerini's longtime hairstylist and makeup artist, exclusively Marie Claire.

To achieve a look that balances the desired level of movement with enough support to withstand jumping and running around on stage (Ballerini keeps everything active), “Deenihan focused on using products that energize or live shows.” The key, she says, was the Pantene Pro-V Volume and Body Mousse to maximize volume, a 1-inch curling iron for soft, textured waves, and a light spray of the alcohol-free Pantene Pro-V Flexible Hold Hairspray for… tousled finish.

Ballerini's makeup took a similarly “fresh and personable” approach, with a flawlessly long-lasting glitter eye effect. (Seriously, I stared at it for an hour and a half and didn't notice a single wrinkle or drop of precipitation.) The product responsible for this is only $11.99.
