Trump's stop in the blue-leaning state could strengthen Republicans' attempt to flip the Senate seat held by Democrats

With time such a precious commodity in presidential campaigns and the clock quickly approaching Election Day, New Mexico Democrats see Trump's trip to the state – his first in five years – as a fool's errand.

“Trump is wasting his time coming to our state as polls show New Mexicans will once again reject his MAGA extremism and divisive rhetoric,” New Mexico Democratic Party spokesman Daniel Garcia claimed in a statement.

And referring to the former president's Oct. 31 visit to Albuquerque, Garcia launched a verbal attack on Trump, saying, “There will be a round orange mass in Albuquerque on Halloween, and we're not talking about a pumpkin.”

But Domenici, trying to close the gap with Heinrich, sees negative benefits in Trump's stop at the airport in Albuquerque, the state's largest city.

“People are really excited about Trump coming here,” she told Fox News. “It definitely excites the base tremendously and the base is kind of a growing concept.”

Domenici argued that “we have so many problems in our state that people are finally saying, 'I'm giving up on Democrats and going Republican,' and that's what happens every day, every week in this race.”

“Many Hispanic Democrats are siding with us. They are angry because the cost of living is so high. They are angry because there is crime everywhere. You can’t even put gas in your car at night,” Domenici claimed. “There’s a lot of impetus for people to want to vote Republican.”

Domenici has decades of experience in the financial industry at Bridgewater Associates (where she served as Chief Financial Officer), Credit Suisse and Citadel Investment Group.

She is also the daughter of the late longtime Republican Senator Pete Domenici, who served in the Senate for 36 years before retiring at the end of his sixth term in early 2009.

The legacy of her father, who died in 2017, gives the younger Domenici a strong political brand and high profile in New Mexico.

“My family’s name really helped me a lot. “That’s because my father’s legacy is so valued here by multiple generations,” she emphasized. “A lot of people still have a big heart for him.”
