Longtime 6abc host and Community star Wally Kennedy dies at age 76

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Wednesday was a sad day for the 6abc family and many local television viewers.

Wally Kennedy, a longtime host of “AM Philadelphia” and “AM Live” here at 6abc, has died. He was 76 years old.

For decades, Philadelphia viewers watched him host the show every morning, which covered everything from entertainment to true crime to the city's social scene.

Former 6abc reporter Amy Buckman reflected on working with Wally, her mentor, on “AM Philadelphia.” She remembered how he carried himself in interviews and how he got the best out of his guests.

“He was an excellent listener. He listened to his subjects' answers. The interviews became much more personal and open,” she explained.

As the show evolved into “Philly After Midnight,” Wally also evolved, bringing a late night flavor to the show.

In addition to the lighter fare, Wally often interviewed some of the biggest names in Philadelphia and beyond.

Wally spoke to comedian Rosie O'Donnell, the late John Ritter and even Prince Albert of Monaco, whose mother – Grace Kelly – was from Philadelphia.

Bernie Prazenica, president and general manager of 6abc, remembered Wally as a major force at Action News.

“Wally had a very distinctive voice that was unusually strong and easy to remember,” he recalled.

Wally has also hosted Inside Story, Sunday Live and community parades such as the Pulaski Day Parade.

After 20 years, Wally left 6abc in 2004 and went on to teach at Temple University. He continued to broadcast and deliver the news on KYW Newsradio.

Everyone at 6abc extends their condolences to Wally's friends and family.
