According to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service, an umbrella could be the best Halloween costume accessory in Indianapolis on Thursday – at least in the afternoon. By Thursday evening, local meteorologists say you may no longer need it.

Meteorologists in central Indiana are predicting showers and possible thunderstorms in the mid to late afternoon Thursday. Rainfall amounts of up to an inch are possible, according to the NWS. While the ground may be drenched in the Indy metro area, meteorologists say trick-or-treaters could be spared from a drenching.

“We expect the rain to taper off and taper off during these sweet or sour hours,” said Jason Puma, NWS meteorologist. “So right now we're looking at a 60% chance of rain early Thursday evening.”

In addition to the rain, Puma warned Hoosiers Thursday night of possible wind gusts of up to 25 mph — something to keep in mind if your Halloween costume features wings or other fragile items.

Yes, as of Wednesday, the latest NWS forecast for central Indiana predicts a 100 percent chance of showers and possible thunderstorms for Thursday, October 31st, along with a few possible showers early in trick-or-treating hours.

“Once the rain stops, it’s over,” Puma said, adding that the rain could stop as early as 4 to 5 p.m. Dry, windy conditions will continue in the area and further rainfall may not be expected until the weekend.

The chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch are possible.
