A manhunt is underway for suspect accused of shooting police chief

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD/Gray News) – A manhunt is underway for the suspect accused of shooting a police chief in Texas.

The Texas Rangers, along with several local law enforcement agencies, are searching for 33-year-old Seth Altman.

Altman is accused of shooting Memphis Police Chief Rex Plant late Thursday night.

Investigators reported that Plant and another officer were serving a warrant for burglary when Altman ran out the back door. He then opened fire, struck the police chief and fled the scene.

Plant was taken to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas, where he remains in stable condition.

An arrest warrant has been issued against Altman, charging him with attempted murder.

Altman is described as 6 feet, 2 inches tall and weighs approximately 220 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt and jeans.

Officials say he is armed and dangerous. Anyone who comes into contact with Altman is advised not to approach him and to call 911 immediately.

Memphis is located in the southeastern Texas Panhandle, approximately 130 miles northeast of Lubbock and 275 miles northwest of Dallas. It has a population of about 2,000.
