Acadiana energy crews are heading to Florida in anticipation of Hurricane Milton

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) – It's déjà vu again.

Just two weeks after the trip to Florida Help restore power after Hurricane HelenePower crews from Acadiana return in anticipation of Milton.

SLEMCO has announced that stormtroopers are on the way to provide mutual aid Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative on the west coast of Florida. Withlacoochee Electric is headquartered in Dade City, just 40 miles north of Tampa Bay, where the storm is raging expected to make landfall late Wednesday.

Milton is now a Category 5 major hurricane with winds of 160 miles per hour.

Lafayette Utility Systems is also sending crews to Florida, according to a Facebook post. These teams are on their way to Lakeland.

SLEMCO's storm team consists of 30 power line workers, including overhead and underground line workers, tree trimmers, military personnel and substation specialists, officials said. SLEMCO crews will also bring field equipment equipped to inspect and assess damage and remove heavy debris or fallen trees from work areas, according to Mary Laurent, SLEMCO communications coordinator.

“The 2024 hurricane season has been particularly challenging over the past few weeks, and the next few weeks will be no different as relief workers from all parts of the country travel to Florida to help restore power,” Laurent said. “We know that if the situation were to be reversed, the electric cooperatives we support now would come to us immediately.”
