BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — Bournemouth beat Southampton 3-1 on Monday, extending its miserable start to the English Premier League.

Southampton remain winless after six games and are level on points with Wolverhampton at the bottom of the table with one point. The run marks the promoted team's worst league start since 1998.

Brazilian striker Evanilson scored his first goal for the Cherries and Antoine Semenyo starred, scoring one and assisting another as Bournemouth scored all three goals in the first 45 minutes.

“It’s a goal we expected from Evanilson,” said Bournemouth assistant coach Tommy Elphick. “He’s so intelligent and makes such sweet runs. We didn't find him often enough, so I'm happy for him.

“The first half is a representation of what we did in the spells. It was electric.”

Bournemouth moved up to 11th place.

The home team started well and took the lead after 17 minutes. Marcus Tavernier was the architect, deftly taking a quick free-kick that caught the Southampton defense off guard. Evanilson kept running and hurled the ball past the goalkeeper.

Former Bristol City winger Semenyo was always a threat on the right and after 32 minutes his cutback found Lewis Cook, whose shot deflected in off Dango Ouattara.

Five minutes later, the Ghana international added his own name to the scoresheet with deft footwork before firing a angled shot low into the far corner.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis scored for Southampton early in the second half but it failed to spark a comeback. The home side had more possession in the second half but rarely threatened Bournemouth's goal.

“I didn’t recognize our team,” said Southampton coach Russell Martin. “There was no aggression or courage. They looked around and were in self-preservation mode on the field. I didn't like it at all. They showed fight in the second half, but it was too late.”
