Biden calls Trump voters “trash.” Why am I not surprised?

Joe Biden's “garbage” comment about Donald Trump's supporters fits into a broader pattern of Democrats insulting political opponents and their voters.

With less than a week to go before the presidential election, we have definitely entered a desperate phase of the campaign, with Republicans and Democrats hurling ugly accusations and insults at their opponents.

The latest? Both sides hurl the word “garbage.”

Vice President Kamala Harris had hoped that Tuesday evening would be dominated by her big campaign speech, during which she gave her closing arguments at a location near the White House.

Instead, President Joe Biden made headlines with a comment he made to his supporters in a video conference.

Biden responded to a comedian's terrible “joke” at former President Donald Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Insult comedian Tony Hinchcliffe wrote a truly terrible commentary about Puerto Rico, calling it a “floating island of garbage.”

Apparently outrage ensued, and Democrats have kept the comment alive in the news ever since.

So Biden thought he would “help” Harris by engaging in a conversation with a progressive Latino group.

On that call, Biden was heard saying, “The only trash I see floating out there is his supporters – his demonization of Latinos is incomprehensible and un-American.”

Intentional or not, Biden said what he did

White House and Democratic media surrogates immediately tried to do damage control when Biden's comments surfaced on social media.

They tried to argue that Biden meant to say “supporter” (singular) in reference to the comedian’s inappropriate joke.

But… that's not how it sounded to everyone who watched Biden say those words.

Biden and his team should have been smart enough to know that stringing together “supporters” and “trash” when talking about Trump could lead to problems. Apostrophes are not visible to listeners.

Whether he wanted to or not, the president poured gasoline on the fire that had been burning since the weekend — and gave Republicans plenty of justifiable ammunition.

The comedian's “joke” was in terrible taste (although Hinchcliffe insults everyone — that's what he does for a living, as The Daily Show's Jon Stewart noted), but it denigrated the roughly 75 million Americans who voted and will Voting for Trump in this election is also terrible.

In fact, it's fair to say that what Biden – the president of the United States – is saying about tens of millions of Americans is far worse than what a comedian says at a rally.

This incident also fits into a broader pattern of Democrats insulting political opponents and their supporters, particularly in the run-up to elections.

Biden's “garbage” comment must be seen in the context of what he has said about Trump and his MAGA base. For example, in 2022, Biden referred to Trump supporters as proponents of “semi-fascism.” In recent days, Harris has also used the term “fascist” to denigrate her opponent – and, by extension, his supporters.

And remember 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's infamous comment when referring to many of Trump's supporters: “Basket full of deplorables.” Many Americans didn't like being labeled “racist” and “sexist” simply because they disagreed with or didn't trust Clinton's policies.

Former President Barack Obama also angered many voters in 2008 with his comments about “bitter” working-class Americans in the Midwest who clung to “guns or religion.”

Biden's comment reminds us that he has no business being president

Biden's most convincing defense, which I don't really believe, is that he accidentally distorted his speech. This indicates even more serious problems.

The incident reminds us that Biden – who will be president for almost three more months – is not up to the task.

And it reminds the American people how Harris and other Democrats have deliberately misled the country about Biden's true condition for months, if not years. This gaslighting prevented a real Democratic presidential primary and resulted in Harris replacing Biden on the ballot — even though no one voted for her.

In her speech Tuesday, Harris said: “For too long, America has been marked by too much division, chaos and mutual distrust. Then it can easily happen that you forget a simple truth – it doesn’t have to be that way.”

Given Biden and Harris' comments in recent days – as well as their deception about Biden's health – it's really hard to take them at their word.
