Bruins captain puts dry spell and losing streak behind him.

BOSTON – Brad Marchand did not extend his contract or his goal drought on Saturday evening.

The Bruins captain disputed a report on Canadian television that he was close to a three-year extension with the team he has played for his entire career. But that came after the 36-year-old forward scored in overtime to give Boston a 4-3 victory over the Maple Leafs at TD Garden.

The Bruins were on a three-game winning streak and hadn't been playing well. But after blowing a 3-2 lead late on, they regrouped and won in extra time.

“It was nice for the group to be rewarded for playing the right way. “Sometimes you do it once or twice and it doesn't go the way you want and you start to switch and get back into bad habits,” he said. “And we didn’t do that tonight, even when they scored late, we just kept playing the right way. It paid off. That’s not always the case, but it’s definitely nice when it is.”

Marchand said it was a good sign that the team didn't collapse after losing the lead in regulation time.

“The boys were composed, the coaches were composed. We were confident that we could still do it and that we still had the chance. That’s why I liked our attitude,” he said. “It's a game. It won't be a game-changer, but it's a great way for us to realize that we're a good team when we play the right way. … It’s a great way to start building our foundation and understanding how we need to play to be successful and find something to build on.”

The goal was Marchand's first goal of the season. After starting training camp late following offseason surgeries, he had failed to find consistency or finish in net through the first eight games. He said he didn't dwell on his scoring drought for long, but was still happy to put it behind him.

“I've been through a lot of different phases in my career, good and bad, and you have to stay balanced. I didn’t get too into it, but it’s definitely nice to get that out of the way,” he said.
