The 22nd Amendment, ratified on February 27, 1951, establishes term limits for those elected president.

According to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum, George Washington, the first U.S. president, resigned after two terms. This unofficial limit was observed by every president after Washington until Franklin D. Roosevelt, who was elected president four times from 1932 to 1944.

In 1947, two years after Roosevelt's death, the constitutional amendment was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives as a proposal to limit presidential terms to two terms. After some revisions by the Senate, the proposed amendment was approved and sent to the states for ratification.
