Chelsea Freeman on husband Freddie Freeman's World Series run and his son's health journey

Chelsea Freeman discusses Freddie Freeman's performance as the 2024 World Series Most Valuable Player winner and her family's support behind the scenes.

In an exclusive interview with “Good Morning America” ​​conducted before Game 5 of the World Series, the mother of three discussed her husband's incredible run, her son Max Freeman's recent health battle and the Dodgers' supportive community.

“The craziest thing is he's injured at the moment, so he's playing with a sprained ankle, and he's had a broken finger and all these other things. So our standards were very low,” Chelsea Freeman said of her husband. “The fact that he played so incredibly well is like an absolute miracle. It’s really hard to even find words for the things he does.”

In Game 5 of the World Series on Wednesday night, Freddie Freeman and the Dodgers captured their second World Series title in the last five years by defeating the Yankees 7-6 at Yankee Stadium.

After a historic season that included setting a home run record, Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman was named the Series' Most Valuable Player.

“He's such a perfectionist, so he doesn't think he's done as well as he would have liked. “It’s just incredible that he’s finally setting that tone with all the things he does,” Chelsea Freeman said of Freddie’s World Series run.

In Game 1 of the Series, Freddie Freeman hit the World Series' first-ever walk-off grand slam home run.

Chelsea Freeman, a mother of the three sons, said the couple's oldest child, eight-year-old Charlie, who plays baseball himself, watched his father's heroic moment in the Dodgers' bedroom.

“He said all the kids were watching, crowding around the TV, thinking, 'We're going to lose.' “You know, I really hope not, but two outs in the 10th inning and we're down,” Chelsea Freeman said. “Freddie hit the ball, and (Charlie) said they all started going crazy, like they jumped on him, like they jumped up and down, like it was just the coolest moment ever.”

In addition to Freddie Freeman overcoming injuries this season, the Freeman family also faced personal challenges at home. This summer, Chelsea shared that her baby son Max was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome.

In an August 1 Instagram post, she wrote that Max was “quickly fading out and went into full-body paralysis” but that they were able to get him to a hospital to “strengthen his lungs.”

She shared in the post that he was “extubated from his breathing tube and removed from the ventilator” after some of the “hardest and scariest days” for their family. She also asked for prayers in her emotional update.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Guillain-Barré syndrome is a “rare neurological disorder in which a person's immune system mistakenly attacks part of their peripheral nervous system.”

Chelsea shared that Max is now “doing a lot better” and is undergoing physical therapy.

“As far as his Guillain-Barré – he's still doing PT – but I mean his progress has been absolutely stunning,” she said. “Our primary care physicians, our neurologists, our doctors are all just thrilled with how well he’s doing.”

She said the family also found an incredible support system within the Dodgers organization.

“The Dodgers have been so supportive of us, our family and Max from the beginning – I felt like every woman in this organization reached out to me… I just felt so connected,” she said. “We are a family and we know that we can rely on them for everything and that they have our back.”

She continued, “That's why I think it's so cool that Freddie is finally having his shining moment and being able to give back to them, the fans and the Dodgers in general because they've just been incredibly good to us throughout the whole process.”

Before the Dodgers' win on Wednesday, Chelsea Freeman said that given everything her family has been through, winning this World Series with the Dodgers would be like a fairytale ending to the season.

“We’ve done it before, but Freddie is from California. It would just be absolutely incredible to do it in front of his family and this fan base and this organization that has been there for us and supported us all year long.” “To do it with the Dodgers and get the ring,” she said .
