Chiefs' Andy Reid had the perfect comment on Patrick Mahomes' ankle injury scare

Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared to suffer an ankle injury during a touchdown flip to running back Samaje Perine in Monday's 30-24 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Seemingly everyone from Chiefs coach Andy Reid to Mahomes' teammates to Chiefs fans held their breath as they saw the three-time Super Bowl MVP in pain on the turf and waiting for help from the training staff outside of it field was required.

But Mahomes jogged back onto the field and eventually helped the Chiefs to an overtime victory, keeping them undefeated. When Reid was asked about the injury after the game, he told reporters he couldn't believe the star QB could return so quickly, adding a perfect one-liner about Mahomes' ankle.

“When he was kidnapped, it wasn't that easy… I didn't know exactly where he was going to be with that,” Reid said. “He might have the loosest ankles in America. I mean, it's ridiculous how he can come back from these things. And on top of that, he’s mentally strong.”

Reid went on to explain that he told Mahomes he was taking him out of the game – and that the Chiefs QB didn't agree with that.

“He’s a competitor,” Reid said. “I told him I was going to take him out and he wanted to fight me. He’s a tough kid.”

Mahomes told reporters he thought Reid was joking when the coach approached him about ejecting him from a tied game in the fourth quarter.

Reid declined to draw similarities between that ankle injury and the one suffered by Mahomes in a 2023 playoff game, telling reporters that he would update his QB's status on Tuesday. For his part, Mahomes told ESPN's Lisa Salters that he would be ready for the team's Week 10 game against the Denver Broncos.

Reid, Mahomes and the Chiefs, back-to-back defending Super Bowl champions, have the NFL's best record at 8-0.
