Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shakes off a rolled ankle and leads Kansas City to an OT victory

Mahomes entered the medical tent but soon jogged on the sideline. He was back in the game on Kansas City's next drive to thunderous applause from fans at Arrowhead Stadium.

Despite the initial scare, he did not appear to be significantly affected by the injury as the final quarter or extra time progressed, although it was noticeable on some plays. On his first drive back, Mahomes orchestrated a 15-play, 78-yard touchdown march to take the lead, then drove down the field again in overtime to score the game-winning touchdown.

He was 34 of 44 for 291 yards and three touchdowns on the night, with his post-injury stat line sitting at 11 of 15 for 102 yards and a touchdown.

“When he was carried away it wasn't that easy, I didn't know exactly where he was going to be with it,” head coach Andy Reid told reporters. “But he might have the loosest ankles in America. I mean, it’s ridiculous how he can come back from these things, and on top of that, he’s mentally strong.”

Mahomes suffered from an ankle injury after rolling during a Week 8 win against the Las Vegas Raiders. He was listed on the injury report throughout the week of practice until Monday evening, but participated fully each day.

It's not the first time Mahomes has suffered an ankle injury, as Monday's action may bring back memories of the quarterback's spectacular performance in leading the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory two seasons ago with a sprained ankle.

Luckily for the Chiefs, Mahomes said this rolled ankle isn't nearly as bad as that injury and figures it's more about managing the pain in a short week leading up to the game against the Broncos.

“It hurt a lot more,” Mahomes said of the injury in 2023. “I still have mobility in my ankle and even after that game, and of course you're going to sleep and probably have a little swelling tomorrow, but in a short week “You go in there and take care of it and be ready to play next week.”
