Chiefs roster: RB Keaontay Ingram, TE Jody Fortson join practice squad

Reporters in the locker room after the Kansas City Chiefs' practice session on Thursday noticed two familiar players back among their teammates — and the Chiefs said both have been added to the team's practice squad.

One of them, as expected, is running back Keaontay Ingram, who was added to the 53-man roster last week before appearing in some special teams snaps in the team's 22-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night. The third-year player, who spent his first two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, was released from the team on Tuesday and cleared waivers on Wednesday.

But the other returning player is a bit of a surprise. Tight end Jody Fortson is back with his former team, which first signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2019. He spent two seasons on the team's practice squad. He appeared in 19 games in 2021 and 2022 – collecting 14 receptions for 155 yards and four touchdowns – and then missed 2023 on the team's reserve/injured list due to a shoulder injury suffered during training camp. In March, Fortson was cleared to leave in free agency. He then signed with the Miami Dolphins but was released on August 25.

The Chiefs already had a spot open on their practice squad. They made room for Fortson by placing undrafted rookie tight end Baylor Cupp on the practice squad's injured list.

Kansas City still has one open spot on its 53-man roster.
