Could Lance contribute to the offense?

Trey Lance appears to be the Cowboys' most explosive runner. So why not make him the backup quarterback on game days and add in some read options or running plays to see what he can do? The only time Cooper Rush takes the field is during a blowout win or loss – a time that could also be used to give Lance some much-needed game experience. In the unlikely event that Dak Prescott gets injured, why is Rush on the sideline? If so, Lance could at least get them through a game. – Anthony Robertson/Dallas, TX

Patrick: I understand the sentiment here, considering what Lance was able to show in the preseason with his legs and, at times, his arm. The problem is that Cooper Rush has the better arm, and that means that in an injury situation, you now have the better runner at quarterback, while the better thrower can't come into the game – since the emergency quarterback can only play if both of active QBs are injured. It doesn't feel like the Cowboys want to take that risk when Rush has shown he can win games in this league. Tommy: At this point, I don't think Trey Lance will make any difference in the Cowboys' offense. That's not to say Lance can't be a great player someday, but I don't think the Cowboys would rely on him over Cooper Rush if they had to for some reason. Sure, a few late-game snaps would be nice to get him ready to play in an NFL game again, but how valuable will those reps be to his development when he's likely coming in during a bust and facing the opposing team's reserves must? ? I think the best thing for Lance's development right now is to absorb as much as possible from two experienced quarterbacks in Dak Prescott and Rush, learn the ropes of the offense, and then have him as prepared and comfortable with it when the time comes to make possible the playbook and personnel before asking him to take over running the offense in any capacity.
