Cruz Azul defeated City Rivals Pumas (and more!)

Santos Laguna and Mazatlán are both out of playoff contention and neither was able to prevent recent attempts to change their fortunes after a goalless draw at Estadio Corona.

Puebla ended a six-game losing streak with a surprise win against coachless Chivas. The only goal of the game came after an hour when Emiliano Gomez, on loan from Uruguayan club Boston River, scored his third goal of the season. The result leaves Los Rojiblancos in eighth place, while Puebla narrows the gap to six points from the playoff positions.

The final game of the evening was between two teams that were at the bottom of the table, but it was León who was able to breathe a sigh of relief with a comfortable victory. Los Leones went into the break with a one-goal lead thanks to Angel Estrada, but three goals from Luciano Cabral, Diego Hernández and the legendary Andrés Guardado in the last twenty minutes secured a decisive victory as Los Gallos slipped to the bottom of the table.

The game of the week took place in the capital as the in-form Pumas hosted city rivals Cruz Azul. Angel Sepúlveda provided the game's first twist within the first 60 seconds, giving the league leaders an early lead. They backed up their impressive start to the game with a second goal after 12 minutes as Ignacio Rivero scored his fifth goal of the season. The Pumas were unable to find their way back into the game and suffered their first defeat in six games. Next up is a visit to Guadalajara to face Chivas next weekend.

Tigres was able to respond after two defeats in the league against city rivals Monterrey and Mazatlán and prevail against 15th place Pachuca. Juan Brunetta scored his second goal of the season to give the hosts a first-half lead before Los Tuzos responded less than 10 minutes before half-time. In the second half the two could hardly separate until Jonathan Herrera made the breakthrough in the 78th minute. Fans witnessed a thrilling end to the game after Javier Aquino received a second yellow card in stoppage time, but Pachuca were unable to capitalize on their advantage.

Atlas was hosting Tijuana and both teams were looking to solidify their playoff status. The two were in 9th and 5th place before kick-off and played out a boring draw, with the Guadalajara team dropping to 10th while Los Xolos were a point ahead of the Pumas.

In the city of Juárez, fans witnessed a six-goal thriller, but the result favored visiting San Luís. Fans had a three-goal lead and feared the worst when Sebastien Lamonge scored a brace and Mateo Klimowicz added a goal of his own, but Juárez fought back when Oscar Estupinan scored a brace of his own. As Yan Philipe aimed for a remarkable comeback, all hopes were dashed as he gave the visitors a fourth goal and returned all the points to San Luís Potosí.

Toluca continued their fight against Cruz Azul at the top of the table as Jesús Angulo scored a hat-trick before Agustín Palavecino scored a consolation goal for the home side. With this result, Los Diablos Rojos' streak increased to five games without defeat, while Necaxa dropped to 13th place, behind Puebla and León.

The final game of the weekend was a box office affair in the capital as Las Águilas and Los Rayados met at the Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes. A slow first half was followed by a quick start to the second as Brían Rodríguez gave the home side the lead before late drama ensued. Jordi Cortizo equalized for Monterrey in the 87th minute, but the visitors only lasted two minutes when Alvaro Fidalgo scored a goal to steal all three points for América.
