Daccord stays close, but Kraken can't close the gap

Andrei Svechnikov scored a power play goal in the first five minutes of the game to put the Kraken in recovery mode from the start. And when Jack Drury scored again with just over three minutes left in the second half after firing a pass from Jackson Blake to the net, the Kraken were already outnumbered 26-11 and showing little sign of offensive competitiveness.

Only Daccord was keeping them close at this point, stopping 35 of 39 total shots.

The Kraken have struggled to generate offense in the four games Vince Dunn was sidelined with an injury that is expected to keep him out for several more weeks. They have scored a total of just three goals in the first two periods of these four competitions, with a record of 1-2-1.

They finished 2-2-1 through five games at home and now embark on a road trip with as many contests that should frequently test the team's mettle.

Neither the Kraken nor the Hurricanes are known for scoring a ton of goals, although Carolina likes to unleash a barrage of shots at their opponents from all angles. The Kraken managed to eliminate the dangerous ones early on, but things looked completely different in the middle frame.

Carolina crashed into the net more often, forcing Daccord to make some tough saves. Daccord also had help from its defenders, with Ryker Evans stretching across the goal crease midway through the second period, preventing a likely Carolina goal.

Jamie Oleksiak had a shot blocked with his knee early in the frame and had to stay on the ice – barely able to stand on his injured leg – while the Hurricanes kept the ball for another 1:22 and a few before that The game was finally stopped when a puck flew into the crowd.

Oleksiak walked slowly to the bench and had to be taken to the locker room because he couldn't put any weight on his leg. But to his credit, he stepped up again and helped thwart a four-minute penalty from Yanni Gourde later in the same period.

Things looked bleak when McCann was stopped in the final seconds of that period on a clear breakaway opportunity while outnumbered. And Daccord's goalkeeping certainly kept his team alive long enough to have a glimmer of hope when McCann converted in the third period to extend his points streak to six games in a row.
