EUGENE The No. 8 Oregon Ducks remain undefeated (4-0) after a 34-13 victory over the UCLA Bruins in Oregon's first conference opener as a member of the Big Ten Conference.

Overall, Oregon coach Dan Lanning was pleased with what he saw from the team. The Ducks had strong performances from starting quarterback Dillon Gabriel, wide receiver Tez Johnson and linebacker Bryce Boettcher, who picked up his first career interception.

However, the victory came with injury concerns.

Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson took a hard hit from UCLA's Bryan Addison in the second quarter and took some time to get back up. Ferguson left the pitch under his own power but had to go to the dressing room for further examination due to a head injury.

Ferguson's quarterback and best friend, Dillon Gabriel, had some good words for Addison after the hit.

Ferguson did not return for the game against UCLA. After the game, Oregon coach Dan Lanning said he believed Ferguson “will be fine” after he was unable to play again due to the head injury.

“From our perspective, it was a precautionary measure,” said coach Lanning, who continued to ponder whether former Duck Addison’s hit was targeted.

“I have to watch it on film,” Lanning said. “It definitely looked like it had some characteristics of targeting. In my mind it was like there was a start, but I couldn't see the success on the copy after the fact.”

Coach Lanning evaluated the performances of receivers Evan Stewart and Jeffrey Bassa and provided insight into the win.

Here's what Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning had to say after No. 8 Oregon's 34-13 win over UCLA:

Lanning's assessment of the win:

“Completing the game in many ways. There are still some things in growth areas for us. Obviously the turnover didn't look good at the end of the half. But other than that, I thought our team played really well. Big difference.” Third defeats between our team and their team. We have won in many ways, but we are excited about our growth in the next week. We need to be able to bring this issue to an end quickly and move on quickly.”

Lanning on Oregon's defense:

“We closed the game in many ways. There is still a lot for us in growth areas. Obviously the turnover didn't look good at the end of the half. But other than that, I thought our team played really well. Big difference.” Third defeats between our team and their team. We won in many ways. We are really proud of our boys' performance. So there will be a quick turnaround in the next week. We need to be able to bring this issue to an end quickly and move on quickly.”

Lanning on Terrance Ferguson's status:

“Yeah, I think Terrance will be fine. From our point of view, this is just a precautionary measure, but he is fine.”

Lanning on Oregon's offense in the second half:

“Yeah, we hit ourselves in the foot with a few of them. It also started with a really long field, and at the start of one of them it started to stagnate. But ultimately, I think the offense had some really bright moments. “We'll just be able to come out of halftime and start fast.”

Lanning on Dillon Gabriel's performance:

“I think Dillon had a really positive performance, except for one play. And I think he's continued to prove himself to be a really accomplished quarterback. He did a really good job. One of the things Dylan and I were impressed with was how he used his feet.” When the first answer wasn't there, you did really well.

Lanning on the offense's ability to attack along the perimeter:

“I think it just keeps people honest. And if you run the ball well, you'll get a few one-on-ones out there. We have to block better at the edge. I think that's one thing that's really clear. “But if you have dynamic playmakers and we get the ball in their hands and see if they can make one-on-one tackles, then I think they pretty much have you Did a good job blocking.”

Lanning on Tez Johnson's performance:

“Yes, of course I have to watch the film. I thought there were some really positive aspects to his game.”

Lanning on Jeffrey Bassa's performance:

“I think this is the first week that Jeff feels really healthy. He had a great week of training. And that's why I think his performance was really something to behold. It's hard to be able to go out and play on a game day. “You haven't been able to train this week. The bye week was certainly a leader for us, he understood what the opponents wanted to do tonight.

Lanning on Oregon's offensive coaching staff:

“I just think at the end of the day, our offensive team has a very good understanding of what their strengths are and how can we not play to their strengths? Correct? We wanted some other players to attack this game, for the most part.” “At some point we're going to break some of these runs open even further, and some of these passes are going to break even further.”

Lanning on Evan Stewart's role in the offense:

“There were moments where we shot at Evan and the ball might have been slightly off or he might have been in a different position, but we will continue to use Evan. He can be a dynamic player for us.”

Lanning on Jordan Burch:

“Yes, he plays like a great player. Again, I have to watch the film, but it's hard to block, right? I think he proves that.”

Lanning on Dillon Gabriel's efficiency:

“He’s the one who makes every play. None of these coaches are allowed to make any of these plays. So Dillon was extremely efficient all year long. I think he has taken what the opponent gives him, but he has to continue to do that for us.”

Lanning on the offensive line:

“I think any time you can protect the quarterback and run the ball effectively, it’s usually a good night.”
