'Dawson's Creek' Alum James Van Der Beek Reveals Colon Cancer Diagnosis

James Van Der Beek is optimistic after being diagnosed with cancer.

The Dawson's Creek alum, 47, revealed the health update in a recent interview with PEOPLE, where he discussed his private battle with the disease.

“I have colon cancer,” Van Der Beek told the outlet. “I have dealt with this diagnosis privately and, with the support of my incredible family, have taken steps to resolve it.”

He added: “There is reason for optimism and I feel good.”

Representatives for Van Der Beek confirmed his diagnosis Weekly entertainmentbut did not comment further.

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer begins in the large intestine or rectum, which together make up the large intestine in the digestive system. Treatment for the diagnosis may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Although Van Der Beek did not reveal any further details about his diagnosis, he acknowledged the continued support of his family, including wife Kimberly and their six children Olivia, 14; Joshua, 12; Annabel, 10; Emilia, 8; Gwendolyn, 6; and Jeremiah, 3.

Although this is the first time Van Der Beek has spoken publicly about his diagnosis, he announced plans to attend earlier this year The real Full Montya two-hour Fox special that will raise awareness of prostate, testicular and colon cancer testing and research – and ends with a striptease from a troupe of male celebrities. In addition to Van Der Beek, the cast also includes Anthony Anderson (Black), Taye Diggs (Everything American), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Bruno Tonioli (So you think you can dance?) and Chris Jones of the NFL.

Aside from stripping down for a dance, the men will also push their limits physically and emotionally with a series of curated experiences designed to push them out of their comfort zone. It's also possible that Van Der Beek will provide further insight into his diagnosis as the group delves deeper to “share their personal stories about how cancer has impacted their lives.”

Meanwhile, the actor will star next Offside: The QB and mea Tubi original film hitting theaters on November 29th. He also continues to place great value on spending time with his family. Earlier this month, Van Der Beek celebrated his son Jeremiah's third birthday with an emotional Instagram post in which he wrote: “We had no idea how much we needed you. But YOU did it. You are once again proof to us that children are born with their children. Their own thing, their own nature, their own appetites and their own personality, and you have never shied away from telling us exactly who you are are and what you want.”

He added: “Thank you so much for sneaking into our lives. Thank you for all the unique ways you challenge me (quite an accomplishment after five kids), and thank you for being the best cuddler on the planet. We love you guys. Extremely grateful to have these curls in my life and to be your father.”
