Detroit Tigers' Jake Rogers misses out on the 2024 Gold Glove Award

Detroit Tigers catcher Jake Rogers received recognition for his outstanding 2024 season and became a finalist for the Gold Glove Award for the first time in his four-year MLB career.

But Rogers didn't receive the ultimate prize.

Rogers, one of three American League finalists, lost to Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, Rawlings Baseball announced Sunday night. The award is voted for by managers and coaches (75%) and the SABR Defensive Index (25%). The other finalist was Kansas City Royals catcher Freddy Fermin.

“I think his continued influence on our guys is very evident,” manager AJ Hinch said Oct. 8, when the Tigers were in the postseason. “He was thrust into this seasoned leadership type while he was still trying to do things for the first time. His steadfastness, his personality, his self-deprecation, his self-deprecation – all of that is good for reducing tension. “That will of course be ready by October.

Of the three finalists, Rogers ranked third in defensive runs saved (plus-13) and second in fielded runs saved (plus-12). Raleigh, also in its fourth MLB season, ranked first in both defensive runs saved (plus-17) and fielded run value (plus-14).

Raleigh excelled at pitch framing and Fermin excelled at blocking, but Rogers was considered the best all-around catcher due to his variety of above-average skills.

The 29-year-old Rogers ranked in the 91st percentile in framing, 89th percentile in blocks, 75th percentile in pop time and 65th percentile in caught steals. He also called pitches for all 31 starts for Tarik Skubal, who led the AL in wins (18), ERA (2.39) and strikeouts (228).

“He was good for our pitchers,” Hinch said. “I don't think anyone has as big an influence on Tarik as he does in terms of mid-competition and in-game adjustments. He’s just a really good influence on our guys.”

Hitting shouldn't play a role in the voting, but it's worth noting that Raleigh was the best hitter among the three finalists. Raleigh hit .220 with 34 home runs and a .748 OPS in 153 games; Rogers hit .197 with 10 home runs and a .607 OPS in 102 games.

Raleigh was worth 5.4 fWAR as a total player, ahead of Rogers (2.2 fWAR) and Fermin (1.8 fWAR).

The Tigers acquired Rogers (along with Franklin Perez and Daz Cameron) from the Houston Astros in late August 2017 as part of the Justin Verlander trade. The Astros selected Rogers with the No. 97 pick in the 2016 draft out of Tulane University.
