Devils 5-3 Canadiens (November 7, 2024) Game Recap

NEWARK, NJ — Red-hot Jack Hughes scored a goal and two assists and the New Jersey Devils defeated the Montreal Canadiens 5-3 on Thursday night for their fourth win in five games.

Jesper Bratt scored two goals – the last of which was the game-winning empty-net goal – and an assist, and Ondrej Palat and defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler also scored, helping the Devils extend the Canadiens' winning streak to five games (0-4-1). Jacob Markstrom finished the game with 21 saves.

Alex Newhook scored two goals for Montreal and Brendan Gallagher also scored a goal. Sam Montembeault had 22 saves.

The Devils never trailed after Hughes set up Bratt and Palat for a 2-0 lead in the early going.

Takeaways

Canadiens: This is a young, exciting team that creates scoring opportunities. Their defense is weak and has difficulty clearing their zone. The Canadiens have conceded 58 goals in 14 games.

Devils: Hughes danced all over the ice with his skating. This is the first time he's looked like he did at the start of last season, before shoulder and knee injuries limited him. His three points marked his season best.

Key moment

With the Devils leading 3-2, Markstrom made three big saves to keep Montreal from tying the score, and then Hughes scored on a nice assist from Bratt. He also had a stop before Bratt's second goal.

Key statistics

Bratt extended his home points streak since the start of the season to eight games, making it the fourth longest in franchise history. The record of 11 is shared by Kirk Muller (1990) and Pat Verbeek (1987).
