Different look as Detroit looks for passage

Different look as Detroit looks for passage

Hunter Brown's childhood fandom is taking a backseat today.

Brown, the Houston Astros right-hander, starts Game 2 of the Wild Card Series with his team's season on the line against the Detroit Tigers, the team he grew up rooting for in St. Clair Shores and after winning the Lakeview High School and Wayne State.

The Tigers won Game 1 3-1 on Tuesday and can secure a spot in the American League Division Series, where the Cleveland Guardians await the winner of the Wild Card Series.

“What an opportunity,” Brown told reporters in Houston on Tuesday.

Brown faced the Tigers twice this season, once in relief in May and then as a starter in June. In the two games, he allowed just one run over 12 innings while posting 16 strikeouts. He is 3-0 against Detroit in his career with a 2.93 ERA.

With a right-handed hitter on the mound, the Tigers' lineup looks different than it did in the game, with Kerry Carpenter back at designated hitter and batting second and Colt Keith starting at second base and batting fifth. Zach McKinstry also starts, playing third base and batting seventh base.

The Tigers leave the series to the bulk bullpen plan that carried them for much of the final two months of the season after star Tarik Skubal was dominant in Game 1. Tyler Holton will be the starter for the Tigers.

First pitch is at 2:32 p.m. Eastern on ABC and 97.1 The Ticket.
