Lighting diyas or small clay lamps is a treasured Diwali tradition and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness. Dhanteras

On this day, it is customary to light 13 diyas, each with a unique meaning and placement. Diyas are placed throughout the house – at the entrance to welcome prosperity and guests, in the kitchen to symbolize health and abundance, and in the puja room to honor the divine and seek blessings. Each diya embodies a special blessing and fills the home with light and positive energy for the festive season.

Choti Diwali

On Choti Diwali or Kali Chaudas, it is auspicious to light 14 carefully arranged diyas. Place 11 diyas around the edge of a plate with a four-sided diya in the middle, which should be lit first, followed by the others. Adding a pinch of sugar or sweets to the diyas symbolizes the desire for sweetness and prosperity in life and enhances the blessings of the festival.

Diwali

On Badi Diwali or Lakshmi Puja, it is customary to light numerous diyas throughout the house and yard, symbolizing the hope of a bright and prosperous future. Many also light diyas on their balconies, sharing the joy and warmth of Diwali with neighbors and passersby. However, never leave diya or candles unattended and ensure they are kept in a safe place away from things that can catch fire.

It is important to remember that these are just general guidelines and that there is no one “right” way to light diyas on Diwali. Some may choose to light more or fewer diyas based on personal traditions and preferences. The most important thing is to light diyas with a pure heart and a sincere desire for goodness and positivity.
