At least 64 people have died after heavy rain hit eastern Spain late on Tuesday. Some areas received a year's worth of rain overnight, local officials said.

According to the country's weather agency, rainfall on Tuesday evening exceeded 70 gallons per square meter in some areas of southeastern Spain, including more than 100 gallons of rainfall per square meter in Chiva, about the same as the average amount of rain received in the region over a year was recorded year.

More rain is expected on Wednesday and Spain's weather agency is issuing an emergency alert for the coastal region near Valencia, which reportedly saw its heaviest rainfall in 24 hours since 1996 on Tuesday.

Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles told CNN the flooding was an “unprecedented phenomenon” and more than 1,000 Spanish military personnel were deployed to support rescue efforts.

The Mediterranean reached its highest recorded temperature for the second year in a row earlier this year, which forecasters said could increase the likelihood of further severe weather in the region. In September 2023, Spain experienced severe flooding, with more than 15 cm of rain falling in some areas and the deaths of at least three people. Last month, another storm hit central Europe, killing at least 12 people in Romania, Poland, Austria and the Czech Republic.
