Dylan Sampson breaks the Tennessee football touchdown record against Kentucky

Dylan Sampson broke the Tennessee football record for rushing touchdowns in a season on Saturday night.

Against Kentucky, Sampson scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter and a 6-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Those were his 18th and 19th rushing TDs of the season. This broke Gene McEver's single-season UT record of 18 rushing TDs, set in 1929.

McEver was a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. And Sports Illustrated retroactively concluded that he would have won the Heisman Trophy that 1929 season if the award had existed then.

McEver also holds the UT record for total touchdowns in a single season with 21 in 1929. Sampson is also well on his way to breaking this record.

Alabama's Derrick Henry holds the SEC single-season record with 28 rushing TDs in 15 games in 2015, including the postseason.

Sampson, a junior, has scored 32 rushing TDs in his career. McEver also holds this career record with 37 rushing TDs from 1928 to 1931.

Sampson entered the weekend as the SEC leader in rushing yards and touchdowns. He has rushed for at least 100 yards in eight of the last nine games, dating back to last season's Citrus Bowl.
