Eric Adams' perverse plan to destroy Elizabeth Street Garden for housing units

Eric Adams' perverse plan to destroy Elizabeth Street Garden for housing units

Mayor Adams is moving full steam ahead with his tragically misguided plan to destroy a popular community sculpture garden in Lower Manhattan to make way for a paltry 123 “affordable housing units.”

His team gave the Elizabeth Street Garden until Thursday to stroll around.

Has Hizzoner lost all sense of perspective?

Because what sense does it make to build 123 residential units if that means the residents? entire community (and indeed the city) will lose valuable green space in an area where such idyllic venues are already rare?

The garden has served as an important recreational spot in the neighborhood for decades and attracts 200,000 visitors each year.

Hundreds of free programs took place here – poetry readings, musical performances, fashion shows, film screenings and more.

Thousands of people have sent letters and signed a petition asking Team Adams to find another location for the shelter.

In the meantime, City Hall appears to be banning perfectly reasonable alternative spaces.

Councilman Christopher Marte says he has been working with garden managers to find new locations, but the city has so far refused to lift its eviction order.

“This is our cultural center in Little Italy, and we don’t have the green spaces that others take for granted,” Marte advocates.

Yes, the city's housing market is a mess, but the heavy-handed government is a big reason why.

And Team Adams isn't going to solve the problem by tearing down parks and paving over green spaces.

This is in clear contradiction to the spirit of the mayor's “City of Yes” initiatives, which are about having the courage to do better, not about stripping the city of its existing treasures.

We know you're busy, Mayor, but take a few minutes to think again: saving this park will bring you a lot of goodwill.
