Ethel, who turned 96 in April, spent the summer doing her favorite activities and being with her immediate family, her family said.

“She had a great summer and transition into fall,” Kennedy wrote on X. “She enjoyed spending time with her children, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren every day. She was able to go out on the water and visit the pier and enjoy many lunches and dinners with the family. It was a gift for all of us and for her too.

Kennedy, the current special envoy for economic affairs to Northern Ireland, said she was recovering well and was being treated in hospital.

“She is, as you may know, a strong woman who has lived a remarkably full life. We’ll take care of them here,” he posted. “Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. We ask that you respect our family’s privacy during this time.”
