Europe's Greens call on Jill Stein to withdraw from US election to prevent Trump's victory – POLITICO

“Right now, the race for the White House is too close for comfort,” the statement said. “We call on Jill Stein to withdraw from the race and support Kamala Harris for President of the United States.”

But with the election just days away – voters go to the polls on November 5 – and relations between Europe's Greens and Stein's party strained, the plea seems unlikely to sway them.

“We are committed to this presidential race and would never betray our legion of supporters — and the many supporters who have already cast their votes — by abandoning our mission now, regardless of which anti-democratic person or group makes the proposal .” Stein’s team said in a statement. “Grassroots democracy is a central tenet of the Green movement worldwide, and for one group of Greens to tell another group to stop participating in democracy is disappointing and unprincipled.”

The European Greens' statement on Friday highlighted the “different values and policies” of the European and US Greens and noted that “there is no connection between the two as the US Greens are no longer a member of the global Green Party organization “.

The statement attributed the “rift” to the American party's “relationships with parties with authoritarian leaders and serious policy differences on key issues, including Russia's major attack on Ukraine.”

Stein was criticized for attending a dinner in Moscow sponsored by Russian state television RT in 2015, where she sat at the same table as President Vladimir Putin. In its statement, the Stein team rejected the criticism as “slander” and referred to the Green candidate’s X contribution on this topic a year ago.

This story has been updated with a statement from the Stein campaign.
