Fetterman calls Trump's support in Pennsylvania 'amazing': 'You can see the intensity'

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman weighed in on the state of the presidential race in his key battleground state, calling former President Trump's support there “amazing” while predicting that Elon Musk's support is “going to be really important.” .

“There's a difference between not understanding it and also acknowledging that it exists,” Fetterman says told the New York Times in an interview published Saturday morning when asked about the enthusiasm for Trump in Pennsylvania. “And anyone who spends time driving around can see the intensity. It’s amazing.”

Fetterman continued, “I attended an event in Indiana County. Very, very red. And there was a supermarket with Trump stuff, and it was a hundred feet long. (There were) dozens of t-shirts and hats and bumper stickers and.” I mean, it's like it all took on a life of its own. And that doesn't mean I admire it. It's simple – it's real.

Fetterman said he believes Musk, who supported Trump and appeared with him at a rally at the site of Trump's first assassination attempt in Butler, will appeal to voters in Pennsylvania.

“And now (Elon) Musk is joining him,” Fetterman said. “I mean, for a lot of people that’s Tony Stark. This is the richest man in the world. And he's obviously and undeniably a brilliant guy, and he says, Hey, that's my guy for president. This is going to be really important.”

Fetterman said he was “disturbed” when Musk began showing up on the Trump campaign trail, saying he was “in some ways” a “bigger star than Trump.”

“Endorsements really aren’t often meaningful, but this one is, I think,” Fetterman said. “That worries me.”

Fetterman told the New York Times he doesn't believe the 2024 election will be about “any particular policy,” but rather the “strong choice” between Harris and Trump.

“It’s visceral,” Fetterman said. “And that's why the people who are still left and haven't decided yet are asking themselves: What do I want in the next four years? And I think enough people will choose Harris. But it will be much, much closer than anyone would want.

The Real Clear Politics average of Pennsylvania polls shows Trump narrowly leading Harris by less than a percentage point.

Political eyes are on Pennsylvania as the state that will likely decide the outcome of the election. Both Trump and Harris have repeatedly zigzagged the state's election campaign in recent weeks, while voter registration data for the state released this week shows significant shifts in favor of Republicans final phase of the electoral cycle.
