Final starting grid for the Brazilian Grand Prix in Formula 1 when penalties are imposed

After a late, hectic qualifying session on Sunday morning, there is a very unusual starting grid for the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix in Formula 1.

Title chaser Lando Norris starts from pole position and shares the front row with George Russell's Mercedes.

Yuki Tsunoda has his highest starting position ever in third ahead of Esteban Ocon's Alpine – P4 marks his best starting position in an otherwise difficult 2024 season.

Liam Lawson also has a personal best with fifth place on the grid ahead of Charles Leclerc's Ferrari.

Alex Albon should have started seventh but will not start the race after his crash in qualifying. Williams didn't have time to make the repairs.

His grid position remains empty, meaning Oscar Piastri will still start eighth (the seventh car on the grid) ahead of Aston Martin duo Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll.

Both Astons suffered accidents in qualifying, meaning the team had to rush through two repair jobs before the race.

Valtteri Bottas' Sauber starts from 11th place ahead of Sergio Perez's Red Bull.

The Ferrari of Carlos Sainz – another driver who caused one of the five red flags in qualifying – will start from the pit lane.

Pierre Gasly takes 13th place in his Alpine ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Ollie Bearman.

F1 leader Max Verstappen qualified 12th but will have to serve a five-place grid penalty that drops him to 17th. Despite Sainz's start in the pit lane, he will still be 17th. However, he has already made up a place with Albon and left seventh place on the grid.

Behind him, Franco Colapinto – whose Williams also had to be repaired after a qualifying accident – Nico Hülkenberg and Zhou Guanyu complete the field.
