Flames vs. Devils prediction, tips and NHL odds

The Calgary Flames continue to juggle their lines, but Connor Zary remains a constant as a sharp-shooting forward. Look for him to test the Devils defense at least a few times on Friday night.

The Calgary Flames will look to end their four-game losing streak with a win over the New Jersey Devils on Friday, November 1 at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

New Jersey is heating up with back-to-back wins from its own four-game deficit, and my top Devils vs. Flames predictions and NHL picks have Calgary winger Connor Zary taking a few shots tonight.

My Devils analysis

Calgary Flames winger Connor Zary is quickly establishing himself as a key performer and building block for the future. The 2020 first-round pick has bounced around the lineup, with Flames head coach Ryan Huska keeping his line combinations in the mix early in the season, but that hasn't had an impact on Zary's shot volume.

Zary recorded a respectable 8.01 shots and 15.68 attempts per 60 minutes in eight of 10 games this season, recording two or more shots. Additionally, Calgary boasts a Corsi-For percentage of 47.0, ranking 26th at 5v5, while Zary ranks fourth at 50.0 CF percent at 5v5 and at the same time recorded the fourth most ice time per game (17:59) Flames forward.

This is a clear example of his acclimation to the highest level, and Zary has shown similar growth in his shot volume in his past appearances in the AHL and WHL. He averaged 1.6 shots per game in his first full season in the AHL, increasing to 2.5 in his second. Similarly, he averaged 2.4 per game in his first run through the WHL, then climbed to 3.6 per game in his second.

The New Jersey Devils have been one of the best possession teams in the NHL, and they're trending that way again with 59.0 CF% and 19.32 shots per 60 allowed over the last two games. This sets up a slight slide for the Devils, as these numbers will most likely fall closer to their season marks of 51.1% and 27.08.

I've targeted Zary in the shots market because he's a tweener at the moment and should probably be traded for a total of 2.5 shots at plus-money odds. In addition to the reported 60 points, he is also averaging 2.4 shots and 4.7 attempts per game.

Paying the high price isn't for everyone, but this lower total still has value based on my prediction of him finishing in 2.4 shots tonight. Additionally, I will continue to support Zary as long as he continues to get top minutes and maintain the increase in shots and attempts.

Bet99

Connor Zary Over 1.5 shots

Erik Haula Over 1.5 shots

Nico Hischier Over 2.5 shots

The Flames have given up the fourth-most shots per game to opposing centers, and Devils centers Nico Hischier and Erik Haula have both put a lot of pucks on net lately. Of course, as mentioned, Calgary also struggled in 5-on-5 possession, allowing the fourth-most shots per game (32.7).

Hischier has taken three or more shots in eight of 13 games this season, including five of his last seven. He also posted an impressive 10.04 shots and 17.58 attempts per 60 minutes while logging a whopping 20:13 of ice time per night.

Huala was similarly impressive considering he is being traded for a lower total. He has registered two or more shots in eight of 13 games this season, including six of the last seven, averaging 7.98 shots and 11.18 attempts per 60 over 14:27 of ice time per night.
