Flash flooding causes closures and delays in Lowndes County

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WCTV) – Valdosta City Schools will be closed Thursday, November 7, according to a post on their Facebook page.

The closure came after a flash flood in the area. In a Facebook post, school officials said this was because they were unable to get students to school safely.

Scintilla Charter Academy has also decided to close its doors to ensure the safety of its SCA students and staff.

The City of Valdosta is asking drivers to avoid several areas due to flash flooding:

  • The interior area at VHS is flooded in all lanes.
  • Patterson is flooded in Drexel Park.
  • Berkley Road – Water is across the street.
  • Intersection of Saint Augustine Road and River Street – flooded intersection.
  • River Street at Saunders – flooded area.
  • Country Club in Williamsburg – roadway undermined.
  • Saint Augustine Road at Hightower Creek – Roadway undermined.
  • Flooding is affecting the eastbound and westbound lanes of US84 near the intersection with Leon Street.

All South Health District public facilities in Lowndes County are postponing their start times today. All locations are expected to open at 12 p.m. on Thursday.

The city is urging drivers to exercise caution on their morning commute and avoid these areas until conditions improve.

Lowndes County Schools will be open Thursday the 7th.
