RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WOLO) – The Richland County Sheriff's Department says a former SC State football player has been arrested on drunk driving and drug charges.

Former SC State football player Jamare Benjamin is charged with two counts of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, transportation of alcoholic beverages in a motor vehicle with a broken seal, DUI (1st), and simple possession of marijuana.

According to investigators, just after midnight on Oct. 30, Richland County officials saw a Chevy sedan speeding and failing to maintain its lane on Bluff Road.

Attempts were made to stop traffic. Officers say Benjamin threw a paper bag out the window and then stopped the sedan.

During the check, the officer discovered open containers of alcohol and narcotics. According to the officers, it was observed that Benjamin was also under the influence of alcohol.

He was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
