The 31-year-old English singer, who rose to stardom with One Direction before the group's split in 2016, flew to Buenos Aires at the end of September. He was accompanied for part of the trip by his girlfriend Kate Cassidy. He also reunited with his former bandmate Niall Horan, performing at the Movistar Arena on October 2nd and 4th.

Prosecutors believe Payne was alone when he fell from his third-floor room at the CasaSur Palermo hotel room, according to a news release. He died of “multiple traumas and internal and external bleeding.”

Oct. 6: Payne's ex-fiancée Maya Henry posted a TikTok video reacting to the backlash she received from 1D fans for speaking publicly about her ex. The model claimed Payne had been obsessively trying to contact her since their split in 2022. She claimed he called from different numbers and created new iCloud accounts to send her messages. Oct. 16: The hotel manager made two 911 calls and reported that Payne, who he claimed was under the influence of “drugs and alcohol,” was “trashing his entire room.” Expressing urgency, the employee said that Payne's “life could be in danger” and specifically noted that the star was “in a room with a balcony and, well, we're a little scared…”

Minutes later, at 5:07 p.m., Payne fell to the ground from the balcony of his room, according to a statement from Argentina's Penal and Correctional Institutions Prosecutor's Office No. 16. He “died on the spot due to the severity of his injuries.”

Buenos Aires police said they found Payne's hotel room “in complete disarray” – with confiscated over-the-counter medications, energy packs and the anxiety drug clonazepam – and “various items broken.” They said a whiskey bottle, a lighter and a mobile phone were recovered from the courtyard where Payne's body was found, but tests needed to be carried out to link them to the performer.

Prosecutors also said in their statement that Payne was likely alone when he fell. It was noted that witness statements came from “two women who had been in his room with the musician in the hours before, but had already left the hotel when the incident occurred.”

Payne, who leaves behind his seven-year-old son Bear and ex-girlfriend Cheryl Cole, has been open about his alcoholism. In July 2023, he posted a YouTube video in which he talked about completing a three-month stint in rehab and being sober for six months.

On Thursday, his former group — Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson and Zayn Malik — released a joint statement in response to the news of Payne's death.

“We are completely devastated by the news of Liam’s death,” they said. “As time goes on and everyone is able, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved very much. The memories we shared with him will be remembered forever. At the moment our thoughts are with his family, his friends and the fans who loved him by our side. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam.”

His family released a statement on Thursday saying: “We are heartbroken. Liam will live on in our hearts forever and we will remember him for his kind, funny and brave soul. We support each other as best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space during this terrible time.”
