Game preview: Flyers at Hurricanes

Game preview: Flyers at Hurricanes

The Hurricanes are looking to pick up their seventh win in a row against the Flyers on Tuesday night.

Carolina comes into the competition red hot at 8-2-0 and is averaging over four goals per game in their current winning streak. The offensive team has a good chance of staying strong against Philadelphia, which is 4-7-1 and is last in the Metro Division.

Philly is averaging 3.67 goals allowed per game on the young season, a number that will likely prompt Martin Necas to hit the ice. Last week, he was named NHL's second star of the week by recording nine points in three games. His three points in the last game against Washington extended his point streak to six games and marked the highlight of his career. He has a chance to set a new record against a Flyers defense that last gave up three goals against the Bruins on Saturday.

Travis Konecny and Sean Couturier – the Flyers' points and goals leaders – enter this game pointless in their last three games. Philadelphia earned two of its three wins on the season during that span, so perhaps spreading the wealth around when the game comes is the way to go. However, scoring goals remains a tall order against the Canes, who are second best in the league with 2.30 goals allowed per game.

There are two top-10 shootouts in this matchup, with Carolina and Philly ranked fourth and seventh in the NHL. The Canes have the edge on the power play and are fourth compared to the 19th-ranked Flyers, but it may be difficult to achieve special team goals against these PK units.

This is the first of three meetings between the division opponents this season and the only one in Raleigh. The Hurricanes travel to Philly later this month on March 20th and again on March 15th.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at the Lenovo Center.
