John Mara, co-owner of the New York Giants, decided not to make a permanent commitment to quarterback Daniel Jones beyond this season.

“I'm not going to go into that,” Mara told CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones when asked specifically about the injury guarantee in the QB's contract.

Jones noted that the Giants' signal-caller no longer has a guaranteed salary in his contract beyond 2024. That would change if he is unable to complete a physical exam in March due to an injury he sustained this year. In that case, he would be fully guaranteed $12 million, and another $11 million would accrue if he fails a physical exam early in the season.

This potentially presents a situation where the Giants demote Jones and keep him on the sideline to ensure his injury guarantee doesn't kick in. The New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos used this approach with Derek Carr and Russell Wilson, respectively, before each making a quarterback change in the offseason.

Jones was substituted in the fourth quarter of the Giants' 28-3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 7, dropping the team's record to 2-5. He threw for 99 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions on 14 of 21 passes and also endured seven sacks before leaving the game.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll stated that the team would stick with Jones in Week 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and that he would continue to receive first-team reps over backup Drew Lock in practice.

“I think he gives us the best chance, number one,” Daboll said of Jones. “I thought there were a lot of plays where he did exactly what he needed to do, and then there were some plays that weren't just about Daniel. It was a collection of things. It wasn’t just about one person, one shelter or one route.”

In seven games, Jones has thrown for 1,442 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions. The Giants entered the year with low expectations, but he has done little to move the team forward. His cap hit of $41.6 million for the 2025 season makes him a potential cut candidate this offseason.
